Imposing collection of towers crossing the NJ Turnpike near Staten Island!
Posted 19th Apr 2026r/Powerlines
They look kinda like eyelashes (does anyone else see the resemblance of a face in some transmission towers like this?)

What do you think happened here to result in this dead-end setup on one wire, and what’s the reason for hanging it on a few insulators instead of directly from the arm?
Posted 14th Jun 2025r/ElectricalEngineering
Are the insulators on the right backwards? Or does it not matter what way they’re facing?

Aerial view of I-80 in NJ; the highway has been closed in both directions for awhile due to sinkhole repairs from collapse of an abandoned mine below. What kind of repairs even took place? The section of rebar by the crane made me wonder

Asymmetrical tower leading to an intersection of transmission lines
Posted 1st May 2025r/Powerlines
What’s happening here when the line goes from double wires to one? Is the electricity overloading the single wires, not high enough for the double wires, or something else? (near Martins Creek Power Plant PA)

When power lines are being reconstructed this way, how does it work electricity-wise? Do they de-energize every wire, just the 3 they’re working on, or some different way? Is construction equipment concerned about electricity arcs?

Very tall monopoles over the Susquehanna River near Harrisburg PA
Posted 23rd Nov 2024r/Powerlines
Looks like this tower is guyed down right from the wires themselves rather than the tower? Any idea why it’s like this?

I love seeing when they have massive monopoles that go over huge spans like this. The foundation footer and load on those towers must be huge

Love the sight of a ton of different power lines meeting at a big substation

Largest transmission towers you’ve seen?

New to me 2018 Accord 2.0 Touring. Any idea what this little circle is above the drivers seat?

Can someone try out this level and let me know how to beat it? I can’t get past the third area with the buzzy beetles and spikes. PSQ-72J-YTG

Hilariously edited Doug video. Some of these are weird, but this one is hilarious and the edits are real creative!

Base of an older looking lattice transmission tower has one leg that appears to have new concrete poured right over the bottom. Any idea what the problem might’ve been, and why this was the best course of action?
Posted 2nd Jan 2022r/civilengineering
What are these pointy pieces on the arms? There’s also a single pointy piece on top. Something to deter birds would be my guess

Came across new monopoles that are gonna be put in the ground soon, but there are no bolt holes in the base. Are they just put in a hole and held in by the surrounding ground?

Power lines that have just one span between the top and bottom of a mountain ridge, the amount of force pulling on each tower must be crazy!

How is expansion/contraction in concrete controlled when the saw cut joints are only on the surface? Shouldn’t they go through the whole piece and totally separate the pieces? Pic here of new mountable curb/median island on a project

The famous “guido gerheireahn” is actually just Guido Nordheim and it’s kind of a let down that it was really that simple of a name all this time

I’ve heard that concrete bridge beams can only be up to around 180-200 feet long at the maximum. With bridges like this that have a span much longer, what is the difference? Are concrete beams just too heavy as a unit or something?
