The Color of Royalty and the Most Expensive. In ancient times, purple dye (known as Tyrian purple) was obtained from thousands of tiny sea snails. It was so difficult and costly to produce that, for centuries, only Roman emperors and kings could afford it. It was literally more valuable than gold!
