Before first contact the leviathan was curiously analyzing the ulysses and upon contact checked it out in more detail. Unlike the viking ship. This probaply had been the first time it has seen a submarine, at least of that size and it may thought it could be atlantean tech.

Hear me out. The Krakken storyline could have worked if the creature itself was the seperated head of a Leviathan, that got reanimated and became psychic. It would tie the movies more together and would not come out of nowhere like the entire sequel felt anyway.
